Meet Maximus and Storm. They are brother and sister from a litter of eight whose parents were a ‘police dog’ and a Swiss Shepherd protection dog. A fire on the mountain and these two hero dogs have ensured them a special place in the community where they have lived since they were pups.

Cape Town is no stranger to runaway veld fires. April 18th this year brought a particularly bad one very close to home. It moved quickly, consuming everything in its path. As this was happening three suspected arsonists were spotted lighting fires on the Devil’s peak side of the mountain, close to where Max and Storm live.

Their breeding and constant training was brought into play and Max and Storm were released onto the mountain. Almost a kilometre from home they located one suspect and kept him cornered in a bush until the authorities arrived.

As the group made their way back down the mountain to wait for the police, the two fearless heroes were ever vigilant in case the other suspects should appear.

Thankfully, due to actions of Maximus and Storm those particular fires were extinguished, although the main fires continued to wreak havoc coming pretty close to their home. It could have been much worse.

These two gorgeous dogs became local heroes overnight and of course, the local press and others lapped it up. I was called in to take some hero shots for online magazine Happy Tails. There you can read the full story as told by a proud mum!
When I’m not out on the Cape mountains chasing down canine heroes I enjoy photographing dogs and other pets from all walks of life. They can be upholding the law like our Daring Duo here or just total couch potatoes. Contact me to find out more about booking a photoshoot with your own little hero.
